2013 Year of the Snake Gold Coin

2013 Year of the Snake Gold Coin

The sixth annual release within the Perth Mint’s Australian Lunar Series II represents the Year of the Snake. Although sales levels declined after the extraordinary demand seen for the previous year’s dragon coins, the one ounce gold bullion coin quickly achieved a sell out.

The reverse design carries a depiction of a snake moving amidst bamboo shoots. The bamboo is intended to symbolize good health, wisdom, and prosperity. The Chinese character for snake appears, along with the inscription “Year of the Snake” and the “P” mint mark. On the obverse of the coin is the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II designed by Ian Rank-Broadley. The inscriptions denote the precious metal weight and purity and the legal tender denomination, along with the “2013” date.

People born between February 10, 2013 and January 30, 2014 are said to have been born in the Year of the Snake. Those born under the influence of this animal are considered to be wise, graceful, and charming. They may also be natural leaders due to the characteristics of courage and determination.

The 2013 Year of the Snake Gold Coins were available in both bullion and collector formats. The bullion coins included weights of 1 kilogram, 10 ounces, 2 ounces, 1/2 ounce, 1/4 ounce, 1/10 ounce, and 1/20 ounce, which were offered without a mintage limit. These coins would be produced based on demand, although production will close at the end of 2013. The remaining bullion coins included a 10 kilogram size with a maximum mintage of 100 and the popular 1 ounce size with a maximum mintage of 30,000.

Numismatic offerings began with the three different weight proof gold coins which went on sale September 4, 2012. These were offered either individually or as a three coin set, with each option subject to a maximum mintage. The following month, colored versions were introduced with three different sizes available, each subject to a maximum mintage. Finally, the striking high relief 1 ounce gold proof coin was offered, following the introduction of the product type in the previous year.
