2011 Year of the Rabbit Gold Coin

2011 Year of the Rabbit Gold Coin

The 2011 Year of the Rabbit Gold Coins represented the fourth year of release for the Perth Mint’s Australian Lunar Series II. Each year the corresponding animal from the ancient Chinese zodiac was depicted on both bullion and collector coins. The series continued to generate positive interest from both precious metals investors and collectors.

The reverse design for the gold coin depicted a rabbit next to a cabbage and a pot with Chinese lettering. The Chinese character for Rabbit appears above and “Year of the Rabbit” appears below. The Perth Mint’s “P” mint mark appears between some of the cabbage leaves. The obverse design carried the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. The inscriptions included “Australia”, “Elizabeth II”, the “2011” date, the precious metal weight and purity, and the legal tender denomination.

People born within the date range of February 3, 2011 to January 22, 2012 are said to have been born during the Year of the Rabbit. Those born under the influence of this symbol are considered to be intelligent, graceful, and kind. While naturally reserved, they posses good judgement and sensitivity to beauty.

The gold bullion offerings for this year remained similar to other years of the second series. There were nine different weights available, each with their own legal tender denomination, and struck to 99.99% purity. Mintage limits were imposed on the 10 kilogram coin, which went unordered for the entire year, and the 1 troy ounce coin, which completely sold out. The remaining sizes were offered with unlimited mintages during the year of issue.

Numismatic offerings consisted of proof versions of the coin available in 1 ounce, 1/4 ounce, and 1/10 ounce sizes. These were offered individually or within a complete three coin set. Each option came packaged in an elegant oval-shaped display case with an illustrated shipper and numbered certificate of authenticity. A range of five different colored versions of the coin were also available.
