2008 Year of the Mouse Gold Coin

Following the conclusion of the first 12-coin series, the Perth Mint introduced the Australian Lunar Series II with the 2008 Year of the Mouse Gold Coin. Compared to the previous series these coins featured a wider diameter to allow extra space for the new artistry for each animal. Certain inscriptions were also moved to the obverse of the coin, once again to allow larger depictions of the animals.

The reverse design of this first release depicted a mouse crouching on a bed of stones with chilli peppers clustered in the background. The image is framed with a series of circular arcs at the periphery. The Chinese character for mouse appears above with “Year of the Mouse” below. The Perth Mint’s “P” mint mark is also incorporated into the design.

On the obverse is the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. The inscription of the precious metal weight and purity which previously appeared on the reverse, now appears on the obverse. Other inscriptions read “Elizabeth II”, “Australia”, “2008”, and the legal tender denomination which varies based on the weight of the coin.

Those born within the date range February 7, 2008 to January 25, 2009 are said to have been born in the Year of the Mouse. They are believed to exhibit the characteristics of a positive attitude, cheerfulness, and charm which allows them to make friends easily.

Bullion options for this release included a range of nine different sizes ranging from the immense 10 kilogram coin with a mintage limit of 100 pieces to the small 1/20 ounce coin with an unlimited mintage. The most popular size was the one ounce coin, which sold out of the mintage limit of 30,000 pieces.

Numismatic products offered by the Perth Mint included a three coin proof set containing 1 ounce, 1/4 ounce, and 1/10 ounce coins, as well as individual options for each coin. Colored versions of the coins were also released across five different sizes, each carrying a stated maximum mintage.
