1997 Year of the Ox Gold Coin

1997 Year of the Ox Gold Coin

The Perth Mint continued the Australian Lunar Gold Coin Series in 1997, celebrating the Year of the Ox. A range of bullion options were available, along with three numismatic products.

The reverse design of the coin features a mature ox standing in a field of grass and peering over his shoulder. The Chinese character for Ox is present, along with inscriptions of the “1997” date and the precious metal weight and purity. On the obverse is the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II designed by Raphael Maklouf.

Those born within the date range of February 7, 1997 to January 27, 1998 are said to have been born in the Year of the Ox. These people are believed to have the characteristics of patience, confidence, and determination.

The 1997 Year of the Ox Gold Bullion Coin options for this year included one ounce, one-quarter ounce, one-tenth ounce, and one-twentieth ounce sizes. The one ounce and one-twentieth ounce sizes had the lowest mintages of the series for their respective denominations.

The number of numismatic offerings was expanded this year and included a three coin proof set, as well as two individual proof coin options.
