The Perth Mint introduced the Australian Lunar Gold Coin Series in 1996 with the first design representing the Year of the Mouse. For each subsequent year, newly designed gold coins have been released featuring each of the twelve animals of the ancient Chinese zodiac. The success of the bullion and collector coins led to a second series after the first twelve year cycle had been completed, as well as two series of silver coins featuring different artistry.
All gold coins of the series have been struck in 99.99% purity and contain their stated weight in pure gold. For the initial releases, the weights of 1 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/10 oz, and 1/20 oz were available in bullion format, with a three coin proof set available in numismatic format. The positive response to the series led the offerings to be increased.
For the most recent releases, the bullion offerings have expanded to now include 10 kg, 1 kg, 10 oz, 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/10 oz, and 1/20 oz sizes. The numismatic product line has also been extended to now include the three coin proof set, individual proof coins, a high relief proof coin, and colored versions across a range of different weights.
For each year of offering, one or more of the bullion releases and all numismatic releases have been subject to specified maximum mintages. Some of the most popular designs and sizes have sold out, creating numismatic premiums for some coins originally sold at bullion prices.
